How to Setup LOTRO

Welcome to Lord of the Rings Online. This is just an introduction to this wonderful game. We have many more guides available for various classes and systems. There are always more guides being written all of the time, so check back often. If you have a guide you would like to submit, please let us know: Email Us.

We'll discuss each system as we encounter them in the game. So we will generally go in a specific order.

Part 1 – Patching, Registering, and Selecting a Server.

Well you've just bought the game. Congratulation's, Step 1 completed. I am also assuming you've installed it. And if your reading this guide you are connected to the Internet. Whats next? Well lets take a look.

The game just finished installing, you should see an icon on your desktop, it should be labelled as “The Lord of the Rings Online”, Double click this icon.

Give it a minute or two, and you should see a window come up. This is the patcher, allow it an hour or two to get all of the updates for the game. Since the game is always changing, the developer's often update the game in various ways. So do not be surprised if you see an update monthly or more.

While this is patching click on the “Account” button in the window, This will allow you to register your account.

You should find the Product Key that came with your game, it will be packaged in the box somewhere. The Product Key should look something like this:

XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

When you find the Product Key and you have the browser window open. Input the Product Key into the “Product Key” section at the top of the screen. After you have successfully done this, follow the steps on the web page to finish registering your account.

After you finish registering you should have a User Name and Password. Save these, You will need them later to log into the game and play your hero.

After the game finishes patching, log in with the user name and password you created earlier. The next thing that comes up is the Server Select Screen. You will need a pick a server to play on. The characters you create are unique to that specific server, if you switch servers your characters will not follow you. If you want to continue to build up on your characters you need to stay on the same server.

If you have a friend that already plays, talk to them, and ask them which server they play on. If you don't know anyone that currently plays the game, then you can just pick any server. I usually go for the one with the neatest name.

That concludes part 1 of the FAQ, please see Part 2: Character Stats and Attributes for more information.
